Summer Institute for Educators - Vancouver
The Summer Institute is a two day, action-oriented professional development program for educators who want to drive innovation in their classroom and school. Teachers will learn to harness design thinking methods as a framework for creative, project-based learning in their classrooms. We will focus on teaching and assessing BC's Core Competencies of Communication, Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility.
Designed for both teachers new to design thinking and those with prior experience, this program will provide educators with a deeper dive into innovation-based programming for students.
Day one will provide teachers with the opportunity to design a solution to a real world challenge and take their solution from idea, to user testing and iteration, all the way to rapid prototypes. Throughout the day, teachers will learn tools that they can use in the classroom to engage students in ideation, validation and rapid prototyping.
Day two consists of hands-on workshops that focusing on integrating design, entrepreneurship and innovation into curriculum expectations at various grade levels and in different subjects. Today, teachers will have sessions to choose from in order to personalize their PD experience based on interest and grade level.
All participants will have the option to license a course in the FDS App. These courses are grade and subject level specific and provide all of the necessary resources to successfully teach an entire unit of study that uses design thinking as a framework and links to curriculum expectations.

Day 1: A hands-on day of learning design thinking methods, from defining the problem to pitching solutions.
Day 2: Today, participants will choose from various workshops based on grade/subject area and interest. The focus today will be applying the methods learned in day 1 to design learning experiences for students that build future-ready skills!
Leslie is an educator on a mission to empower students to solve the world's big problems. Leslie spent six year teaching at Greenwood College School where she used design thinking and project-based learning to engage students in real-world experiences. Prior to teaching, Leslie was an advocate for using design to improve the public built environment at the Design Trust for Public Space in New York City.
